The Great Debate

Last year for Christmas Jack surprised me with a new car.  A GMC Acadia.  I LOVE it.  Perfect size for what we assumed would be our growing family over the years (note:  car was conveniently borrowed by Jack when I was on bedrest and has not been returned).  Unfortunately it is not the perfect size for newborn triplets.  It works, but it is not optimal.  Since our other car has over 250K miles it is about time for a new car anyway.

You know what's coming.

Is it time for a mini?  Can I do it with an SUV?  If I go SUV, I'm going all out with a tank for the extra room like the Yukon XL.  Sorry but I'll save the environment in other ways.  We have one mid-size SUV already and its just not enough room for getting around with three the same age or for travel.  With all our family out of town and a desire to still go on trips, we hope to be able to travel with some ease (ha).    SO, being the analyst that I am I did some additional research and interviewed each vehicle.

Still confused.  Which one?

Odyssey.....

Yukon....

  1. I highly recommend the pilot, best of both worlds. It has 3 rows, but no option for captain chairs. The second row will hold 3 car seats (and one more on the third if needed). There is a ton of room in the back with the third row down. This way you can still look cool!

  2. You are hilarious! I always said I would never ever drive a mini van. Well, after finding out about our triplets, we decided to get one. And I love it! The sliding doors are my favorite function! Good luck making the decision! I figure fate a few years when they are all out of carseats or can buckle themselves in we will go for a cooler suv. But for now, I love my van. And I seriously just lost all my cool points for admitting that.

  3. This post made me laugh so hard! (Also, I forwarded it to Candi...she and Ed recently traded in their Odyssey for a Pathfinder and she can probably give you the pros and cons of both.)

  4. That was great, I'm really impressed with the chart and inserted images. I used to want a minivan and then I turned 30 and it wasn't as funny any more. Having said that, if I had 3 young kids, I'd probably give in and get the minivan. I actually like them as a vehicle. They're functional and drive well. It's just so hard to be a badass in a minivan.

  5. Hilarious! I'm sure you will make the right decision either way;)

  6. I did a post about this on our blog too because everyone I talked to when we were researching cars for triplets told us "I never wanted a minivan but..." and then went on to explain how awesome their minivan was. We ended up going with a used Odyssey and so far it has been great so you can't go wrong with the evil minivan!

  7. I LOVE THIS!! Yes, please tell all of those people with 30a stickers... you don't live here, nice try with your out of state tag!

Make sure if you get the minivan to put on the line of people stickers, you know the ones, yours would be man, woman, child, child, child, dog ..... LOL!

  9. I'm really sorry to tell you this, but minivan it is. We knew our crazy youth was over when we got ours, with baby #3, in 2001. I am totally ready for an SUV now that the boys are so much older, but you know what? That dang Odyssey has been paid for for seven years--has 187,000 miles on it--the Check Engine light has been on for almost two years--and it just won't die. But here is one really nice consolation about the minivan you won't have considered: there is actually a LOT of space between the parents up front and the kids in the back. So much so that you can play your own music up front while they're doing their thing in back, like you're in little zones. SUVs don't have nearly as much roominess! (though of course once the Goldfish start flying and babies start screaming, any space feels cramped)

  10. Ok I had a highlander and switched to the honda odyssey when the twins were born. The new one is a tad wider and you should be able to fit all 3 behind you. Then when you can turn them around and want to seperate them and put one in the way back you have the choice. I was still able to buckle Alex in (before he learned to di it himself) while I was puting the girls in.
The sliding doors are the best for 2 reasons. Yes when they are older and running through the parking lot you can open them before you get there but just think of being parked too close to someone and not being able to open you door all the way, this eliminates that and makes it to where you can put babies in the car from wither side with ease. John has a Tahoe and I HATE it. I feel so uncomforatble driving it. The Honda Odyssey feels perfect. Even without the third row down it is big enough for double stroller (all I have tried) and groceries. With the third row down you could carry a ton with you for a trip. Then when we travel we put Alex in the back, the twins in the middle and have 1/2 of back down so there are countless options.
The new Odyssey (which I'm having to get because my car was totaled) even has a drink cooler for trips! I bet the YUKON doesn't have that. The hold their value too. I have tried to find a good deal on a used one and it makes more sense to go ahead and get new!
    GOOD LUCK
